I don't think vertical scrolling per se is bad, but you have to be sure your visitor is sufficiently interested to be motivated enough to scroll down part or all of the way down to see all your marketing message/content. Good, relevant content producers need not worry too much about vertical scrolling in the big scheme of things, I think.

On the other hand, dividing content into shorter pages is a pain if the visitor wants to print out the information - and takes longer to navigate through/skim/read etc - so I'd always opt for longer pages over multiples.

(I did a test with my about pages on this blog, and very few people bother reading past page 2, so I think I need to put it back as a long list - no one sees the big projects I've worked on, so it's not working as a marketing tool in that format).

I think the key point is to work your page layout hard and use space wisely to minimise vertical scrolling yet still providing enough whitespace.

I don't recommend removing vertical scrolling altogether - otherwise you end up with one of those ghastly "fixed dimension/postage stamp sized" flash based sites. I have found to be a pain for the user because of the access delays and fragmentation of the content and a pain for the site owner because the content they want to publish seldom fits easily into the space available.

Great list! I agree with 9 of these.

But, #7 ("vertical scrolling = bad") is a myth.
