Following on from my post asking what you dread about the techincal side of running a website, I thought I’d turn to graphics.
Lots of people panic at the thought of doing something artistic with their website. They think their drawing ability has not moved on much since school.
I definitely used to put myself in that category. I took art at school, but along with German (3 noun genders melted my head), Art was going to be 2 of the subjects I failed at miserably.
However, it’s really important to realise that people do judge a book by it’s cover, in this instance, they judge your website by the look and feel it has. There’s only a few seconds to make a good impression and if your site comes across as amateurish, it’s going to be so much more difficult to make a sale, retain a member, or whatever your website goals happen to be. An appropriate and effective look and feel is an essential part of planning how to build a good website.
You have to fight your anxiety and give it a go, otherwise you’re always going to be stuck with a bad-looking website. But don’t worry, help is here.
If you’re struggling with some aspect of graphic design for your website, I’d like to hear from you. I’m offering some free advice to help solve these sorts of problems.
