What’s the Biggest Technical Problem You Face?

by Colette Mason on October 7, 2009

If you dread creating or updating a website because you’re not a techie, let me know!

Scared person looking at a computerI have been building websites since 1996 and in that time I have met a lot of people who dread the thought of creating a website! I mean they really dread it. Even more than exams or a trip to the dentist!

In the early days, it was very difficult to build a website. You had to know how to code. You had to have some programming knowledge. You had to enjoy reading thick computer manuals on Javascript, HTML, VBScript, ASP, SQL Server…and on and on and on.

Since then, things have changed dramatically. Trust me.

I don’t write code anymore and I’ve stopped using tools like Dreamweaver on a regular basis. I use open-source products like WordPress and Joomla  which help you build your website for free.

I use these tools because you can make updates from any computer. (I’m a bit sad – I have 11 computers in total that I’ve collected over the years. That meant when I went out for the day to work at a client site, I’d have to take the PC that was powerful enough to run Photoshop, and the slower one that had Dreamweaver on it.  Dragging 2 PCs around all day got old pretty quickly.) Now I can use my small Asus netbook, or just visit an internet café or local library, and I can make changes to my website.

I think wordpress and joomla are excellent tools for inexperienced website owners to get their site up and running quickly. All you need to do is to pay for some hosting (I use http://www.justhost.com.)  and then you can install wordpress and joomla with a click of a button because JustHost use something called cPanel, which makes looking after your website a breeze.

Because it’s so quick to set these websites up, if you outsource the jobs to a friend or colleague with technical skills, or a freelancer via www.elance.com or www.odesk.com, then the labor charges are really low.

Even though these time-saving tools exist, I know a vast majority of people dread having to work with a website, thinking it’s just too difficult.

It’s really important to me that you learn how to build a good website, and don’t be held back because you’re not sure what to do with your techie issues. I would like to hear what your problem is and why you think solving it is difficult. In return, I’ll offer some free advice to help get you feeling more confident about tackling your website.

You can’t make money online if your site doesn’t exist, or it needs bringing up to date – so why not take advantage of some free advice?

Just enter your question in the comment form below. :)
