World Usability Day: Herding Visitors to The Site

by Colette Mason on November 12, 2009

Flock of sheep

As always when thinking about improving a website, the conversation always turns to traffic – after all, you could have the most user-friendly site in the universe, but if no one visits, then its effectiveness is dramatically reduced.

We thought about ways to market the site online and offline.

There is the option to continue running printed advertisements, supported by the website URL and making sure if there’s a word of mouth referral, the referer can use the site to help illustrate their recommendation.

So far, not much emphasis has been put on link building, pay-per-click campaigns, blogging, forum participation, article marketing or guest posting, since making the website a more key part of marketing is a new approach for them.

All marketing messages take time to write, test and refine. Coupled with the ”technical skills” ceiling most site owners feel constrained by, promoting natural and organic search optimisation (search optimism :) ) can seem a colossal and confusing task.

We did some keyword research looking at types of fireplace, like cast iron, and brand names, like Stovax, looking at how prospects think about searching for information, and some good ideas came up. Doing this keyword analysis and looking at what people are searching for provides very valuable information for businesses – especially when it comes to promotions, and supporting articles to bring in traffic.

An entry in Google Local Business would also be a very cost effective, quick  promotion method

What would you suggest as site promotion methods? Why not post a comment below?

I have some traffic generation suggestions you might find helpful.
